HISTORY |
Students And Firefighters in Education Our S.A.F.E. (Students And Firefighters in Education) program is a 10 week class in which several of our firefighters will visit all the the 3rd grade class rooms in the Unit 4 district along with Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Unity Christian schools. One Day a week for 10 weeks we will visit each class and conduct a 45 minute lesson on various aspects of safety. Some of which are " what is fire" and how can we prevent a fire, how to notify help in case of an emergency. The students will draw a floor plan of their house and show 2 ways out of every room. When this is done they must then practice "their" drills at home with their family. They also will, with the help of their parents, perform a safety inspection of their home. We have also included a section that deals with "GUNS AT HOME" . As you can see this class is not only for the students but it is a class for the entire family. In fact several homework assignments require that their parents help them. The SAFE class is a family affair. We stress to the Kids that it is not enough to just talk about these safety issues in class, but that they must take this information home and present it to their parents and then put these issues into action. At the conclusion of the SAFE class the kids are treated to a pizza party at school. Also if they complete all their homework they are given a certificate and we take them on a tour of the fire station. This tour is not your ordinary. We set up an obstacle course that we must navigate blindfolded. We do this because most of the time the smoke is so thick that we cannot see anything. We also set up our aerial along with different hose lines so that the kids can see the difference. And when all this is done we take them to the parking lot and demonstrate our extrication equipment. Local towing companies bring us cars each day and we "tear'em up". ( For some reason the kids really enjoy this part) This is just a small sample of our SAFE class.
