FIRE PREVENTION Fire prevention is something that is very important to us here at the Herrin Fire Department and we hope that it is as equally important to you. Most everyone knows about Fire prevention week. You may even remember the fire truck coming to your school with lights and sirens "blaring" and seeing "SPARKY " the fire dog or "Smokey Bear" jump off the fire truck and greet all the kids. While this is a part of Fire Prevention it is only a small part. Fire prevention is a 365 day a year job ( 366 during leap year). To this end, we offer many programs to both children and adults. We are available to speak at organizational meetings, church groups, etc. We are more than happy to make arrangements to meet with you and your group. The topic we discuss is up to you. Some of the topics include Carbon Monoxide poisoning, home escape plans, smoke detectors, use of fire extinguishers and more. We can do training and in-services for your business. Also we are available to help you establish an escape plan for your business. National Fire Prevention Week is in October. During this month we need two weeks to reach all the schools and class rooms. The first week we show a video. The video is geared to the grade we are speaking to. When it is over we discuss what was in the video and what the kids can do at home. We follow this up the next week by allowing the kids to practice a fire drill in our E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home) trailer. The Kids then are told once again to be sure to practice these drills at home with mom and dad. Another program we have is our S.A.F.E. class. SAFE stands for Students And Firefighters in Education. the SAFE class is for 3rd graders and has been very succesfull. For 10 weeks we are allowed in the class room to discuss various fire and general safety tips with the students. The key to the program is that the kids are then responsible for taking the information home and "TEACH " mom and dad. If you would like to learn more click HERE. We also are happy to give tours of the fire station. If you have a group that would like to see the fire station all you have to do is call the station and set up an appointment.
